The Operation Stay Alert Program
Operation Stay Alert is a sleep health awareness and sleep disorders screening program specifically designed for firefighters. The project went live on September 8th, 2009 and is currently open to any firefighter who is employed by one of our participating departments.
The primary goal of the program is to improve the alertness, health, sleep, and safety of firefighters. We plan to achieve this by providing easy access to information on topics regarding fatigue management and by screening firefighters for common sleep disorders. The 25 minute training covers topics such as the dangers of fatigue, sleep hygiene and caffeine use for alertness. If you are employed at one of the fire departments currently participating (see list on right), we would like to invite you to take part in our research study.
What people are saying about us:
Batalion Chief David Whiting, Columbus Division of Fire, Columbus, Ohio
Show quote"I took the opportunity to participate in Operation Stay Alert. As a fire service veteran of 28 years and many years of sleepless nights I see the need for basic education in sleep education in the fire service. Restful firefighters improve the safety of all firefighters at emergency scenes. The survey was easy to complete and I feel that this is one way for me to have a significant impact on the fire service in the future."
Major Danny Hague, Oklahoma City Fire Department, Safety Officer
Show quote"I have worked for the Oklahoma City Fire Department for 33 years and I remember many sleep deprived nights, going to work at my second job at 0700 hrs the next morning with a ambulance service, and later as a carpenter framing houses for over 20 years. Wow, could I have used the valuable information from the flyer you sent out. When you mix that with educational video on the web site you have a wonderful recipe for a great nights sleep. Most firefighters are not excited about surveys where they believe the information will most likely never be used. It is obvious the information requested on your survey is well thought out and is a road map to helping our people get the sleep they need to do what they do best? Our personnel need to be well rested in order to serve the citizens that depend on them. Our mission statement is "Respond Quickly, Safely, and Courteously - Meet the Need" I believe the Harvard Sleep Study will help us maintain that mission statement and I am appreciative that our Fire Chief was proactive enough to volunteer our Fire Department to participate in this Study."
